In 2004, The Department Of Family Medicine At The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Evolved From A General Out-Patient Clinic To A Multi-Disciplinary Department Which Innovatively And Creatively Administers Healthcare In Four Sub-units.
Strategically Situated At The New SDG Building Of The Hospital, The First Point Of Call For Any Patient In LASUTH Is The General Out-patient Clinic. There, Patients Who Come Into The Hospital For The First Time Are Assessed, Preliminary Diagnosis Are Made And Those Who Need Further Assessment Are Referred To Other Departments And Units, Accordingly.
The Family Medicine Department Has A Chronic Medical Disorder Clinic Where, (in Collaboration With Other Specialists) Patients With Medical Ailments Such As Diabetes, Hypertension, Metabolic Syndromes, Chronic Medical And Non-communicable Diseases Are Attended To; This Clinic Holds On Tuesdays.
According To Research, The Life Expectancy In Nigeria Which As At 1960 Was Forty Years, Has Steadily Increased To A Little Above Sixty Years Hence The Increase In The Number Of The Dependent Population In The Country. It Is Therefore A Pertinent Move By The Management Of LASUTH To Take The Care For The Elderly A Notch Higher By Creating A Geriatrics Clinic. The Geriatric Unit Which Is Part Of Family Medicine Department, Provides Quality, Immediate And Continuous Care For Older Persons And It Holds On Wednesdays.
Thursdays At The Family Medicine Department Is Anchored By The Lifestyle Medicine Unit Where Specialists Inspire Patients On How To Achieve Preventive And Curative Modalities, Such As Lifestyle Changes For Chronic Medical Issues Which Includes Obesity, Alcoholism, Sleep Disorders And So On; While On Fridays The Family Medicine Department Works In Collaboration With The Haematology Department To Run Retroviral Clinic Targeted At Adolescents And Patients With Comorbidities.
At This Juncture, It Is Worthy To Note That The Work Carried Out In This Department Does Not End With The Clinics Aforementioned. All Through The Week, Doctors And Personnel Who Have Been Trained To Effectively Manage Sexually Assaulted Individuals Are On Standby, Hence The Presence Of The Mirabel Centre In LASUTH. The Centre Is The First Sexual Assault Facility In Nigeria And West Africa, A Lot Of Novel Work Have Been Done There. These Efforts Have Certainly Not Gone Unnoticed As The Center, In July 2023, Was Recognized In The UK By The Duchess Of Cornwall Because Of The Excellent Work That Has Been Done To Revolutionize The Care Of Survivors.
The Family Medicine Department Also Coordinates Clinical Care For Patients On Health Insurance Scheme Which Is Unarguably One Of The Best Way To Access Affordable Healthcare Service In State.
Same Day Care Services Is Gradually Becoming Crystalized In The Hospital Services. This Is Now A Global Best Practice And LASUTH Is Not Lagging Behind. A Lot Of Patients Need Primary Care Surgery And The Department Collaborates With The Surgery Department To Carry Out Day Care Surgeries. There Is Essentially A Burden Of Shortage Of Healthcare Workers And Bed Space Especially In Lagos, This Will Ease The Pressure As People Or Emergency Cases Can Get The Care They Need Immediately And Continue Their Care As Out-patients.
With A Workforce Of Forty (40), Resident And Consultant Doctors, Medical Officers And Ten (10) Nurses, Eight (8) Record Officers, Scientific Officers, Administration Officers And Other Support Staff, The Department Of Family Medicine Is Not Resting On Its Oars At Delivering Quality Healthcare To All And Sundry.
