MEDICAL SOCIAL SERVICES


Social work is a helping profession. It concerns with the study of psycho-social problem of individual, family and groups with the purpose of proffering solutions. Social workers are tasked with improving people’s overall wellbeing, especially the most vulnerable populations. It’s no surprise that one of the largest fields of practice in social work is healthcare. Medical social workers provide frontline psychosocial services to patients and their families to help alleviate their social, financial and psychological problems related to adverse health conditions. The under-listed programs are the activities of Medical social workers in delivering quality health services.

Programs/Activities:
- Social case work and social investigation
- Assessment, counseling and social interventions
- Ward round, referrals-Doctors, self and others
- Home tracing/visits, transfer and aftercare
- Case conference
- Encouraging prompt payment of hospital bills of patients by networking with NGO’s and individual philanthropist.

Objectives/Strategies:
 To give psychosocial support in order to have an holistic treatment given to all categories of patients.
 To ensure social wellbeing of all patients particularly indigent, destitute and abandoned that accesses the facility.
 Continue medical social work education, field practicum training for students in tertiary institutions.

Key Performance Indices:
- 9:11am-Completion of ward round
- 11:30am-1pm Treating referral letters
- 1-2pm; Overall assessment of identified issues
- 2-8pm Follow-up of all cases and attending to all newly referred emergency cases.

Baseline:
All patients are attended to through counseling, assessment, social intervention, bill payment inclusive of destitute, indigent and abandoned.

Target
 To compliment effort of medical team with regard to patient care.
 To ensure better service for indigent, destitute and abandoned patients.
 To ensure prompt transfer of discharged indigent, destitute and abandoned patients and integration of destitute patients.
